Half Rests

Below is an image of a half rest. Notice that the image is a black rectangle that sits on the top of the line (rather than below the line like a whole rest). If there are any notes (ovals) in a measure with a black rectangle, you can be sure it is a half rest rather than a whole rest, because a whole rest takes up the whole measure. This symbol represents two counts (beats) of silence. Count while listening in silence: 11-&-2-& or 3-&-4-& or 2-&-3-&. Your foot should tap the two beats in 4 clear pulses: Down-up, Down-up.
