Notes

Music symbols for making sound with your instrument are called "notes."
Each note has a "head" (the oval shapes found on the staff both outlined ovals and filled in ovals) and most also have a "stem" (a vertical line connected to the oval from the right side pointing up or connected to the left side of the oval pointed down).
Other notes we will learn later also may have "flags" or "beams" connected to the stems, and some have dots to the right of the note head.
Whether or not the note is an outline or filled in, and whether or not it has a stem, flag, beam, or dot
determines the rhythm of the music. Remember, rhythm is how long each sound (or silence) is sustained (held).
